When to choose Next.js over React SPA, WordPress, or Laravel Blade

Choose Next.js when your site needs SEO on competitive queries, when Core Web Vitals matter for paid-media conversion, when your marketing team ships landing pages weekly, when you need SSR because your content is personalised per user, when you plan to grow from marketing site into a product without a stack rewrite, or when your visitor base is heavy on slow-network mid-range Android phones.
Choose a plain React SPA (Vite + React Router) when the app is behind a login wall, when SEO is not a factor, when you already have a mature REST or GraphQL backend and just need a client, or when the whole team is optimised for a single-page-app development model.
Stay on WordPress when the site is a small brochure, when non-technical staff must edit every layout block, when the budget forbids custom development, or when your hosting and plugin subscriptions are already stable and inexpensive. The Next.js tech stack we standardise on
Our default Next.js stack is intentionally boring — because boring is what stays fast, hires easily, and does not break at 2 a.m. We use Next.js 14 or 15 with the App Router, TypeScript by default, Tailwind CSS for styling, and Prisma or Drizzle when the app talks to a SQL database. State management uses React Server Components plus small islands of Zustand or Jotai — not Redux, unless you already run Redux and want the new code to match. Data fetching uses React's native fetch on the server, TanStack Query on the client when required, and tRPC when the same team owns both ends of the API.
For the backend, we pair Next.js with Node.js (Fastify or Hono) or Laravel — depending on what your existing stack looks like. Hosting is a business decision, not a technical one. Vercel is the fastest to ship and the easiest to hand over. AWS (Amplify, App Runner, or ECS behind CloudFront) is the right call for enterprise procurement, VPC requirements, or existing AWS spend.
