EdTech App Development in India — Learning Apps Students Use, Parents Trust, and Institutes Actually Run

K-12 learning apps, competitive-exam prep (JEE, NEET, UPSC, CAT, CUET), live-class platforms, LMS mobile apps, coaching-institute apps, and skill-tech (upskilling) apps built as one system — student, parent, teacher, and admin. Priced fixed in INR, shipped from Ahmedabad for edtech founders and institutes across India and the Gulf since 2015.

  • Student, parent, teacher, and admin apps built as one system on a shared backend
  • DRM-protected offline video downloads (Widevine + FairPlay) so paid content does not leak
  • Live classes on Zoom, 100ms, Agora, or Jitsi with attendance, engagement, and recording
  • Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU with EMI, UPI Autopay subscriptions, and coupon engine wired in
  • NEP 2020-aligned, DPDP Act 2023 consent, and parental-consent flow for under-18 users

Why an edtech app is a different build from a generic content or ecommerce app

An edtech product is not a video library with a paywall. It is a four-sided system where the student, the parent, the teacher, and the operator each need a screen that respects how they actually use the app. The student wants a fast home feed, a lesson that plays without buffering on a Tier-3 network, a doubt-solving flow that gets a real reply, and a streak that pulls them back tomorrow. The parent wants a weekly progress summary in a WhatsApp or app notification, a fee reminder that does not embarrass them, and confidence that the paid content is actually being watched. The teacher or content producer wants a lesson uploader that does not choke on a 4 GB MP4, a live-class link that starts on the first click, and a dashboard that shows which student is falling behind. The institute admin wants a batch and faculty allotment engine, a fee ledger that reconciles to Razorpay, and an analytics view that answers "which content is working" without a data analyst.

That is where a generic content or ecommerce template collapses. A Shopify or WordPress mobile app has no concept of a batch, a live class, an attendance record, an assessment, a leaderboard, an offline entitlement, or a parent linked to a student. Cloning a template from CodeCanyon buys a ten-week head start and then two years of firefighting when the entitlement layer leaks (paid content on YouTube-clone downloader), when the live-class link times out for half the batch, when payment webhooks fail during the peak-hour renewal, and when Play Store rejects the release for missing account deletion under the DPDP Act.

Fruxinfo has been shipping custom mobile apps from Ahmedabad since 2012 and edtech projects since 2015. What we ship today is a proper four-app system — student, parent, teacher, and admin — on one shared backend, wired to a live-class provider, a DRM video pipeline, a payment gateway, and a WhatsApp Business API line, priced in INR up-front, and handed over with source code you own. The apps go through App Store and Play Store review under your accounts with our team on the paperwork, not left as a checklist for the founder or the coaching-institute owner.

What an MVP edtech app actually includes — the minimum that ships

Every founder and every institute owner arrives with a feature list that reads like a BYJU'S roadmap on year six. The right first move is the opposite — cut the scope to what a paying student can consume on launch day, what a parent can monitor, what a teacher can publish, and what an admin can operationally run. Everything else is a version-two problem.

The MVP we ship for a single-institute or single-brand launch is a working four-app system with the modules below. It goes live in ten to fourteen weeks and lets you enroll real students the day it hits the store — not a beta that needs six more months of polish before anyone will pay for it.

  • Student app (Flutter iOS + Android) — phone OTP sign-up, course catalogue, lesson player with DRM, offline download queue, live class, doubt asking, quiz, streak, leaderboard
  • Parent app or shared parent view — child progress, watch-time report, fee dues, upcoming live classes, monthly report card, WhatsApp fallback
  • Teacher / content-producer app or web panel — course builder, lesson upload with resumable multipart, live-class scheduler, assessment builder, student roster, doubt inbox
  • Admin dashboard (web) — student and batch onboarding, fee plan builder, coupon and referral engine, revenue and cohort reports, content approval workflow
  • Backend and API — Node.js or Laravel with WebSocket for live events, PostgreSQL or MySQL, Redis for live state, S3-compatible object storage for lesson media
  • Payments — Razorpay or Cashfree checkout, UPI Autopay subscription, EMI on carts above ₹5,000, coupon and referral wallet, refund console
  • Live class — Zoom SDK, 100ms, Agora, or Jitsi Meet with attendance, chat, hand-raise, and cloud recording that lands back in the lesson library
  • Compliance — DPDP Act 2023 consent, parental consent for under-18, in-app account deletion, GST invoice per payment, accessibility for WCAG 2.1 AA

Cost to build an edtech app like BYJU'S, Unacademy, or Physics Wallah in India — real INR ranges

EdTech app pricing is the second-most-asked question on the first call — the first being "how do we stop content leaking". The honest answer to the price question is: it depends on how much of the four-app system you actually need on day one, and how much live-class and DRM infrastructure sits inside the launch scope. Below are the ranges we quote after a proper discovery — not a range pulled from a marketing blog. Every number assumes a Flutter build (one codebase, iOS + Android), a Node.js or Laravel backend, source code in your Git, and App Store plus Play Store submission handled by us.

A single-institute coaching app — one brand, recorded courses, quizzes, one admin, Razorpay checkout, no live class, no parent app — starts at around ₹3 lakh and ships in eight to twelve weeks. A recorded-plus-live coaching app for a mid-sized institute with student, teacher, and admin, live classes on Zoom SDK or 100ms, DRM downloads, and assessment engine sits in the ₹5-12 lakh range and ships in twelve to sixteen weeks. A full K-12 or exam-prep platform with student, parent, teacher, and admin apps, DRM video pipeline, live class, doubt-solving marketplace, subscription billing, and cohort analytics lands in the ₹12-28 lakh range and ships in sixteen to twenty-two weeks. A BYJU'S, Unacademy, or Physics Wallah-scale platform with multi-brand courses, tutor marketplace, adaptive learning, personalisation, and multi-region deployment is quoted after discovery and starts at ₹28 lakh.

Recurring costs are honest and grow with usage. Video hosting on Mux, Cloudflare Stream, or a bunny.net + AWS MediaConvert pipeline runs ₹0.20-0.60 per GB delivered plus ₹0.15-0.40 per minute encoded — expect ₹40,000-2,00,000 per month at launch scale, climbing with active-user growth. A DRM licence server (Widevine + FairPlay via Mux, VdoCipher, or Bitmovin) adds ₹15,000-1,00,000 per month. Live classes on Zoom SDK are billed per participant-minute (roughly USD 0.006-0.012); 100ms and Agora are similar; Jitsi Meet self-hosted is free but eats devops. Firebase for push and analytics is free for most launch traffic and rarely crosses ₹8,000 per month before 50,000 MAU. Razorpay charges 2 percent on domestic cards and UPI Autopay is free. WhatsApp Business API conversation cost runs ₹0.85-2.85 per notification. App Store fees are USD 99 per year for Apple, USD 25 one-time for Google — set up under your business name.

Everything is fixed-scope. The number in the quotation is the number you pay, and every change request during the build is estimated in writing before work starts. Post-launch, an optional support retainer covers bug fixes, dependency upgrades, iOS and Android version updates, and a 24-hour SLA on standard tickets.

  • Single-institute recorded-only coaching app — ₹3-6 lakh, 8-12 weeks
  • Recorded + live coaching app (mid-sized institute) — ₹5-12 lakh, 12-16 weeks
  • K-12 or exam-prep platform (student + parent + teacher + admin) — ₹12-28 lakh, 16-22 weeks
  • BYJU'S / Unacademy / PW-scale multi-brand platform — from ₹28 lakh, quoted after discovery
  • AI doubt-solving + adaptive learning add-on module — ₹6-15 lakh on top of a base build
  • iOS + Android via one Flutter codebase — no separate native quotation unless brand insists
  • App Store USD 99/year + Play Store USD 25 one-time — accounts under your business name
  • Video + DRM + live-class + push + gateway MDR — real running cost of ₹60,000-3,00,000 per month at launch scale

Feature list by module — what actually gets built in each app

The four-app system is not four copies of the same screen with the colour swapped. Each app does one job for one user, and the value of the build lies in how tightly they talk to each other. Below is the module-by-module feature list we ship on a standard mid-sized coaching or K-12 edtech build — the reference scope every quote starts from.

Student app is where 90 percent of the visible product lives. Sign-in runs on phone OTP with Google and Apple sign-in as backup, plus an age gate and parental-consent handshake for under-18 users under DPDP Act 2023. Home shows enrolled courses, today's classes, streak, and a "continue where you left off" card. Lesson player supports variable-speed playback (0.5x-2x), picture-in-picture, offline download with device-tied entitlement, in-video quiz, and note-taking with export to PDF. Live class opens the Zoom or 100ms room with pre-class chat, hand-raise, breakout rooms, and post-class replay. Assessments run mock tests with negative marking, sectional cut-offs, and a rank predictor. Doubt-asking sends a photo or text to a tutor with SLA-based routing. Streak, badges, leaderboard, and referral wallet round out the loop.

Parent app or a shared parent view inside the student app is the retention lever most Indian edtech founders under-invest in. Weekly watch-time report, upcoming live-class calendar, monthly report card, fee dues with one-tap Razorpay Payment Link, and a WhatsApp fallback for every push notification. Parents who trust the app tell three other parents — this is where organic acquisition lives.

Teacher / content-producer app runs on tablet or desktop web depending on the workflow. Course builder with drag-drop lesson ordering. Resumable multipart upload for 4 GB+ MP4s so a Wi-Fi drop does not reset the upload. Live-class scheduler with recurring slots and cloud recording that lands back in the lesson library. Assessment builder with question bank, image support, and negative marking. Student roster with attendance history. Doubt inbox with SLA timer and canned-response templates. Revenue view per course and per batch.

Admin dashboard is the operator's control room. Student and batch onboarding, fee plan builder, coupon and referral engine, content approval workflow, revenue and cohort reports, subscription MRR/ARR view, refund console, and a payment reconciliation view that ties out to Razorpay settlements weekly. GST invoice generation per payment with GSTIN and place-of-supply logic. Bulk WhatsApp broadcasts for renewal nudges through AiSensy, Interakt, or Wati.

Tech stack and integrations a live edtech product runs on

An edtech product lives on the reliability of about ten integrations. Miss one and the app fails the launch-week fire drill. Below is the reference stack we ship, and the integrations Indian edtech founders and institutes actually ask for on the first call. Every line item plugs in through the vendor's official API, so nothing is a scraped hack that breaks at their next release.

The frontend is Flutter for iOS and Android (one codebase, near-native performance), with Next.js for the admin dashboard and teacher web panel. The backend runs on Node.js (NestJS or Express) or Laravel, depending on the team you plan to grow later. Realtime events (live-class state, doubt notifications, leaderboard updates) run on a WebSocket layer (Socket.IO or Laravel Reverb) with Redis pub-sub underneath. Storage is PostgreSQL or MySQL for transactional data, Redis for live state and rate limiting, and S3-compatible object storage (AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, or DigitalOcean Spaces) for lesson media, PDF study material, and profile images. Push runs on Firebase Cloud Messaging plus Apple Push Notification Service through a single messaging service.

Video and DRM are the make-or-break part of the stack. Mux Video, Cloudflare Stream, VdoCipher, or a bunny.net + AWS MediaConvert pipeline handle transcoding, HLS packaging, and adaptive-bitrate delivery. Widevine (Android + web) and FairPlay (iOS + Safari) DRM tie every play licence to a signed user session so a scraped .m3u8 URL is useless on another device. For offline downloads, the entitlement is stamped against the device ID with periodic license refresh — remove the app, lose the download. This is the difference between "we sell courses" and "we sell courses that stay sold".

Live classes plug into Zoom Video SDK (best when the audience knows Zoom already), 100ms (best India developer support and pricing), Agora (best global scale), or self-hosted Jitsi Meet (best when devops capacity exists in-house). Attendance, chat log, and cloud recording ride back into the app on webhooks so the recording appears in the lesson library within minutes.

Payments plug into Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU, PhonePe, and Paytm — one primary gateway with an optional secondary fallback. UPI, cards, netbanking, wallets, EMI on carts above ₹5,000, and pay-later options surface in one checkout. UPI Autopay powers monthly and quarterly subscriptions with mandate-based recurring collection. Refunds fire back to the original payment method inside 5-7 working days.

AI and analytics round out the stack. OpenAI, Anthropic, or a self-hosted Llama model powers AI doubt-solving, essay grading, and personalised study recommendations. GA4, Meta Pixel + CAPI, Firebase Analytics, and either Mixpanel or Amplitude for funnel, retention, and cohort reporting. Sentry and Datadog for observability. WhatsApp Business API through AiSensy, Interakt, Gupshup, or Wati for renewal nudges, class reminders, and parent updates.

  • Flutter iOS + Android (student + parent + teacher apps), Next.js web (admin + teacher panel)
  • Node.js (NestJS / Express) or Laravel backend with Socket.IO or Laravel Reverb realtime
  • PostgreSQL / MySQL + Redis + S3-compatible object storage — boring, battle-tested data
  • Mux, Cloudflare Stream, VdoCipher, or bunny.net + AWS MediaConvert for video + HLS
  • Widevine (Android) + FairPlay (iOS) DRM with device-tied offline entitlement
  • Zoom SDK, 100ms, Agora, or self-hosted Jitsi Meet for live class + cloud recording
  • Razorpay, Cashfree, PayU, PhonePe, Paytm — UPI Autopay for subscriptions, EMI on ₹5k+
  • OpenAI / Anthropic / Llama for AI doubt-solving, essay grading, and study recommendations
  • WhatsApp Business API (AiSensy / Interakt / Gupshup / Wati) for renewal + parent nudges
  • DPDP Act 2023 consent, parental consent, GST invoicing, in-app account deletion — built in

Monetization models — how edtech apps actually make money in India

An edtech app has more revenue levers than most first-time founders realise, and picking the right mix at launch protects unit economics for the next two years. Below are the models we architect for, with real India-market ranges. Most successful edtech builds run three or four of these in combination, not just one.

Course fees — one-time payment per course or per batch — is the standard coaching-institute model. Price bands run ₹499 for a short skill course, ₹4,999-24,999 for a semester exam-prep course, ₹40,000-2,00,000 for a year-long JEE / NEET / UPSC coaching batch. UPI, cards, netbanking, wallets, and no-cost EMI on carts above ₹5,000 surface in the checkout. Refund and pro-rata cancellation policy is enforced in the admin.

Subscription plans — Netflix-for-learning — are the retention lever that lifted BYJU'S, Unacademy, and Physics Wallah. Monthly ₹299-999, quarterly ₹799-2,499, annual ₹2,999-9,999 for unlimited access to a course library or a content vertical. UPI Autopay mandates power the recurring charge; the customer's manage-plan screen shows next billing date, upcoming charge, and one-tap cancel. Subscription revenue is the highest-margin line item once the base grows past a few thousand active subscribers.

Live-class or 1:1 tutoring — priced per session or per hour — opens a premium tier. ₹500-2,500 per group live class, ₹800-3,000 per hour for a 1:1 tutor session. Tutor marketplace apps split the fee 60:40 or 70:30 with the tutor; a captive-tutor model retains 100 percent. Booking runs on a slot calendar with rescheduling rules; payment goes through Razorpay Route or Cashfree Payouts to the tutor's bank.

Test-series and assessment packs are the highest-margin bolt-on. ₹499-4,999 for a JEE, NEET, UPSC, CAT, CUET, GATE, or bank-exam mock series with detailed solutions, rank predictor, and topper analytics. Delivery cost is near zero; content is amortised across every batch.

Content licensing — selling recorded courses to schools, colleges, or corporate L&D — is the B2B lever. Six-figure annual contracts per institute or per corporate learner, delivered through white-label student apps. We build the multi-tenant infrastructure and white-label pipeline as an add-on module (₹6-15 lakh) on top of the base app.

Adjacent revenue streams — physical books and printed material shipped to the student's address, sponsored placements from allied brands (test-prep book publishers, exam-form services), and cross-sell to career-counselling services — round out the mix. UPI Autopay-driven subscriptions, one-time course fees, and test-series packs are usually the three-lever core; the rest layer on when the base grows.

  • Course fees (one-time) — ₹499-2,00,000 depending on category, EMI on carts above ₹5,000
  • Subscription plans — ₹299-999 monthly, ₹2,999-9,999 annual on UPI Autopay
  • Live classes and 1:1 tutoring — ₹500-3,000 per session, marketplace 60:40 or 70:30 split
  • Test-series and assessment packs — ₹499-4,999, near-zero marginal cost
  • White-label content licensing to schools, colleges, corporate L&D — six-figure annual
  • Physical books and printed material shipped through Shiprocket / Delhivery integration
  • Sponsored placements from allied edu-brands — banner + email + push inventory
  • Referral wallet credits + cohort discounts — proven retention and CAC levers

Timeline and delivery process — how we ship an edtech build

We work in fixed-scope, milestone-billed sprints with a weekly demo. The clients we ship for know what will be on staging every Friday, and they know exactly which invoice covers which milestone. Below is the standard timeline for the three most-common edtech scopes.

Weeks 1-2 are the blueprint phase. On-site or Zoom discovery with the founder, academic head, and operations lead. We walk the current teaching flow — how a batch is announced today, how enrolment happens, how live class runs, how doubt clearance and assessment work, how the money moves back. We come out with a written scope document, a wireframe deck for all apps, a data model, a video and DRM pipeline plan, a live-class provider recommendation, a payment-and-refund flow, and a fixed-price quotation. Nothing gets coded until the scope is signed.

Weeks 3-6 are backend, admin, and teacher panel. The backend, database, admin dashboard, batch and student onboarding, course builder, and Razorpay integration are the first modules built and demoed. The teacher web panel goes live on staging by end of week 6 so pilot content producers can start uploading courses and testing live-class scheduling.

Weeks 7-12 are the student app. The Flutter student app is built module by module — onboarding with parental consent, home, catalogue, course detail, lesson player with DRM, offline download queue, live class, assessment, doubt asking, leaderboard, and referral wallet. Each module hits a weekly Friday demo. Firebase push, deep links, payments, and analytics wire in as horizontal capabilities. By end of week 12 the app is on internal-test tracks on TestFlight and Play Internal Testing with pilot students.

Weeks 13-16 are the parent app or shared parent view, live-class hardening, and launch prep. Parent view of progress, dues, and reports. End-to-end live-class soak tests with real teachers and real students. App Store and Play Store review submission on week 14. Launch checklist — DPDP consent audit, parental-consent audit, in-app account-deletion flow, GST invoice sample audit, accessibility audit (WCAG 2.1 AA), App Store review reply, Play Store review reply — signed off before go-live.

Post-launch, the first month is a hyper-care sprint — daily standup, live production monitoring on Sentry and Datadog, and same-day patches on P0 issues (paywall bypass attempts, live-class no-shows, payment webhook drops). From month two, the app moves to the standard retainer cadence — a fortnightly release, a monthly analytics review, and a quarterly roadmap conversation.

Who this build is for — the four edtech client types we ship for

Every edtech enquiry that lands on our contact form fits into one of four patterns. The scope, the timeline, and the price map to the pattern — knowing which one you are running lets the first call move quickly to numbers.

The coaching-institute owner runs an offline or hybrid institute for JEE, NEET, UPSC, CAT, CUET, GATE, a state-board exam, or a foundation class (Class 6-10). They want their own app so students in the batch can watch recordings, attempt tests, and clear doubts — and so parents can see the fee ledger without a phone call. Scope is a student app, a lightweight teacher panel, and admin — no marketplace, no subscription complexity. Typical build is ₹3-9 lakh, ships in eight to fourteen weeks. This is the fastest-payback edtech scope in the country — a batch of 300 students paying ₹40,000 each already justifies the build in the first year.

The K-12 or exam-prep edtech founder is building a consumer app for students who are not already in their institute. Scope is a full four-app system, subscription and course-fee monetisation, live class, DRM video, referral engine, and cohort analytics. Typical build is ₹12-28 lakh, ships in sixteen to twenty-two weeks. Success depends less on the app and more on content quality plus paid acquisition unit economics — we walk every founder in this bracket through the CAC and LTV math on the blueprint call before the build starts.

The skill-tech and upskilling founder is targeting working professionals with short-format courses — data science, product management, digital marketing, spoken English, coding, design. Scope is a student app plus a lighter admin — no parent app, no batch construct, subscription-first. Typical build is ₹5-12 lakh, ships in ten to fourteen weeks. Live cohorts, community, and mentor 1:1 are the differentiators; we ship these as first-class modules, not add-ons.

The white-label or B2B edtech operator sells content and platform to schools, colleges, or corporate L&D departments. Multi-tenant infrastructure, white-label student apps under each customer's brand, admin dashboards per tenant, and content licensing management. Quoted after discovery, starts at ₹18 lakh. Timelines run five to eight months for the first production tenant, then a copy-and-scale cadence for tenant-two onwards.

If your build does not fit cleanly into one of these four, that is normal — most real projects sit at the boundary between two. The blueprint call is where we place the project on the map and quote against the closest reference.

The next step — book an edtech blueprint call

The fastest way to know what your edtech app should actually cost and what should be in scope is a 30-minute conversation. We will ask about the model (single-institute, K-12 or exam-prep consumer, skill-tech, white-label B2B), the target learner (Class 6-10, Class 11-12, JEE / NEET / UPSC aspirant, working professional), the launch enrolment volume you expect, the content format (recorded, live, hybrid), the payment mix your customers prefer, and the timeline you are working against. At the end of the call you get a written blueprint — recommended scope, module list, video and DRM plan, live-class provider recommendation, integration list, indicative timeline, and a fixed-price quotation — with no obligation to move forward.

Call +91-99245-12890 or drop an enquiry through the contact form. We reply the same working day.

EdTech app questions we hear on the first call

What coaching institute owners, K-12 and exam-prep founders, skill-tech operators, and white-label B2B edtech teams ask before starting a build. If yours isn’t here, we will answer it on the discovery call.

A single-institute recorded-only coaching app starts at around ₹3 lakh and ships in eight to twelve weeks. A recorded-plus-live coaching app with student, teacher, and admin, DRM downloads, and Zoom-SDK or 100ms live classes runs ₹5-12 lakh and ships in twelve to sixteen weeks. A full K-12 or exam-prep platform with student, parent, teacher, and admin apps, DRM video pipeline, subscription billing, and cohort analytics lands in the ₹12-28 lakh range and ships in sixteen to twenty-two weeks. A BYJU'S, Unacademy, or Physics Wallah-scale multi-brand platform with tutor marketplace and adaptive learning is quoted after discovery and starts at ₹28 lakh. Every number is fixed-scope — the amount in the quotation is what you pay, with change requests estimated in writing before work starts.
